UPC Barcodes

Why do I need a barcode?
You are required to have a UPC barcode on the front cover of your magazine. This personalized barcode identifies your magazine throughout the distribution chain. Your code initiates all billing and distribution related functions.

How does the barcode work?
The first five digits identify the publisher to the distributor, as well as the retail price. The second five digits identify the magazine title. The remaining two digits in the upper right hand corner identify the issue of the magazine (i.e. ‘01’ is January).

Where do I get a UPC bi-pad number?

TransMedia Group Inc. will assign you with a number.

What is the correct size for a barcode?
The minimum magnification of a barcode is 80%, you cannot use less than that. The correct size is determined by the amount of space put aside for the barcode. If the space is 2” x 1.5” you will fill in 100%. If the space is 1 10/16”x 1” you will fill in 80%.

What is the difference between a UPC barcode and an ISBN?

Magazine UPC barcodes have an issue code; each magazine is scanned by issue. An ISBN number is given through a government agency, and identifies the book title worldwide.
