Commonly Used Terminology

RDA - Retail Display Allowance, this is an additional discount offered to retailers. Retailers incur extra costs in order to compete in today’s market, this discount compensates the retailer for their efforts.

Reship Allowance - A reship allowance is offered to assist in the cost of delivery. This is an allowance provided to some wholesalers that service accounts via common carrier (usually bus or Can Par) that are in remote areas sparsely populated.

Sell Through - Sell through or sales efficiency refers to the number of copies sold from the total distribution. If 100 copies are distributed and only 50 sell, the sell through rate is 50%.

Premature Return – Copies returned from the retailer before the shelf removal date, or copies that were shipped to wholesalers and/or retailers and returned without being placed on the newsstand.

UPC Barcode – A UPC barcode must appear on the front cover of all magazines displayed at a newsstand. The barcode identifies the magazine throughout the distribution channel. This code initiates all billing and distribution related functions.
